The Defence Ministry has announced the acquisition of four 'King'-class Landing Ship Carrier (LSCs) for the purpose of amphibious military operations. Each LSC is armed with 1x MK-100 gun, 2x Air Defence Missile Launchers and 2x machine guns to support landing forces on enemy's beach. Beside its crew, each LSC could carry up to 30 troops or 2 armoured vehicles.
The LSCs would not operate alone but in concert with the Royal Class Missile Frigates in any amphibious operations. The Royal class frigates would destroy enemy's defences along the beach and protecting the LSCs from aerial threat while the LSCs machine guns would protect the landing troops while they are on the beach.
The LSCs marked the completion of the Navy 2010 Naval Modernization Program designed to build the capability of the REN in protecting the Kingdom's maritime territory.
