Former Prime Minister Sentenced to 20 Years Imprisonment

​Former hardliner Legonia's Prime Minister Rito Wingo has been found guilty by the High Court on 12 counts of corruptions and 1 count of treason. He has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.

Wingo, who led the Legos First Party (LFP), was sacked by King Arius after allegation that he launched a coup attempt against the Royal Family.  He was subsequently arrested for bribery involving members of the El Chapone drug gang. 

​The leader of El Chapone gang, who became a star witness against Wingo, was killed this year in an ambush while leaving court. 

The trial, however, continued despite threats from the El Chapone gang. Police special forces are regularly deployed during the trial.

After Wingo was handed the imprisonment sentence, members of his supporters tried to storm the High Court but was pushed back by volleys of tear gas. About 20 of the 400 protestors were arrested.

Security around the capital city, Legotown, remains tight. Police roadblocks have been set up across the city.

Prime Minister Sir Winston Mofty had expressed relief at the outcome of the trial, and hoped all Legonians would stand united.
