Sea Wall Constructions Gaining Pace

Six sea walls projects have been awarded to local Bricks contractors as part of the New Green Deal economic package.

These sea walls will be built around coastal communities that are threatened by rising sea level.

The largest project will be the Legotown Sea Wall project, which will cover about 35 km of coastlines. Currently, about 12 km of the coastlines around Legotown is protected by 1.5 metre of sea walls.

The new project in Legotown will increase the height of these sea walls to about 2.5 metre tall. Some initial construction works have already began at areas where the  erosions are at their worst.

Most of the sea walls around Legotown are about 85 years old, They were built during the colonial period to protect the city from high waves. 

Parts of these sea walls are crumbling, and in one area, sea water had broke through the sea walls and caused damages to seaside villas. 

The six projects will be overseen by the future Ministry of the Environment. Prime Minister Sir Winston Mofty has announced in Parliament last week that a new ministry will be formed to oversee environmental works and constructions. 

Currently Sir Mofty is seeking an audience with King Arius to seek His Majesty's permission to establish the new Ministry.
